Overcoming the fear of visibility

In this blog I want to talk about a word, that for many coaches feels uncomfortable, and that word is Visibility.

As NLP Practitioners, we coach because we want to help others, but we often have blocks about being visible or seeking attention.

To be successful though, we must gain confidence about being visible. It’s not about saying ‘look at me, look at me’, but more about ensuring people know we are there and able to help them to make positive change in their lives.

If you are now sitting there thinking ‘I can’t do it’, consider this for one moment…

Imagine you are setting up a new restaurant; you have a beautiful setting, comfortable furniture, the best chef in the area who has designed an amazing menu. You’ve spent months preparing for the opening day, ensuring everything is just right.

On the opening day you feel ready and excited. You open for business, but nobody arrives.

You realise you forgot one thing; to tell people about your new venture!

This is how it can feel with coaching. We gain our qualifications, set up our website, and practice on our friends, but because we haven’t told people we are there to support them, nobody turns up.

The key to gaining confidence is about choosing your stage; deciding what will be your first platform for visibility. There are lots to choose from and it’s not all about being on social media, in fact, as NLP Practitioners, getting regular clients through social media is often more challenging initially as you haven’t built the ‘know, like, and trust’ factor with your potential clients.

As a first step, think about what gives you energy, what you are passionate about doing, and what you feel drawn towards. For some of us that might be writing blogs, for others it could be sharing your story through talks or podcasts.

Getting visible in a way that feels right for you is essential to maintaining momentum. If you are doing activities to gain visibility that drain your energy or feel uncomfortable, you will very quickly give up, or stop doing them.

There are lots of options; here’s just a few to get you started. As you read through them, consider which ones feel exciting, or interesting.

  • Podcasts, as the host or a guest

  • Social media

  • Blog writing

  • Vlogs

  • Books or e-books / e-guides

  • Getting your profile on coaching directories / coaching associations

  • Affiliations

  • Talks

  • Webinars

So, what will you choose as your first visibility platform?

You might be thinking that none of the options feel comfortable Well, you know what to do… collapse anchors on the emotions that come up when you think about doing it or do a belief change on the belief you have about it. Making the changes you need to increase your courage to get out there will get you over the first hurdle. Once you are out there you will most probably find that it’s not so bad… in fact you may find that you love it and want to try other platforms as well.

What one action will you take this week to increase your visibility?

Take care,

Jo
